Historically, Netflix has kept a tight grasp on its viewership numbers. Unless the streaming service chooses to display some numbers and hype up one of its movies or shows, we are often left in the dark about which projects are dominating the world’s most popular streaming platform.
But what if there was a way to track which movies and shows were most popular on Netflix? From day to day, week to week, month to month, year to year?
Well, now there is. Thanks to Netflix’s Top 10 ranking system, we can not only see which movies and shows are performing the best each day, but we can track which of those programs control Netflix over longer periods of time.
The process is simple. A movie receives ten points for a first place finish, nine points for a second place finish, eight points for a third place finish, etc. In a spreadsheet, I track where movies and shows rank each day in a spreadsheet and dole out points accordingly. I then add up those points over the course of time.
The beauty of this system is that it places all movies and shows on an even playing field. While Netflix will continue to gain more and more subscribers and programs will gain more and more viewers, the Top 10 ranking system remains consistent. So even if Netflix gains 10 million subscribers over the course of 2021, the highest score any movie or show can earn on a particular day is ten points.
With this system, we’ll be able to evaluate which movies and shows are truly the most viral on Netflix.

For now, yes, just the U.S. But we’re working on something bigger and more international!
One of the problems with thus system is it doesn’t actually equate to viewship. Cobra Kai and Bridgeton when they first reached number one had had two to three times the viewership of other number ones in their first week. Also Cobra Kai is a 30 minute show that gets binged more quickly than hour shows which take longer and stays on the list.
