Here are the movies we watched and discussed this week:
The Favourite (Drama/Comedy). Our article explaining the ending of The Favourite is actually one of the top hits on our website. As it was added to HBO this week, we strongly recommend one of our favorite movies from last year. A period drama with a strange sense of humor, The Favourite follows two women who play mind games with the Queen of England. An entertaining watch that also has lots of depth.
Summertime (Romance/Drama). David Lean's movies display some of the most magnificent uses of color ever caught on film. While he has other films that are more popular—such as Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago—his little seen movie Summertime is just as pretty as anything else he made. The film follows an aging spinster (played by Katherine Hepburn) during a trip to Venice, where she falls in love. A slow-paced, but captivating romance.
Suspiria (Horror/Mystery). One of the greatest horror films you've likely never seen (or heard of), Dario Argento's Suspiria was an important film for the genre. While the remake that came out last year was much slower paced and more artsy fartsy, the original Suspiria—which follows a girl who believes her ballet school is run by witches—is a stylistic tour de force that always has something insane waiting around the corner. A great watch if you're looking to be entertained by a horror film.
2 Fast 2 Furious (Crime/Thriller). With Hobbs & Shaw hitting theaters last weekend, we thought we'd recommend an under-appreciated film of the Fast and Furious franchise. Largely seen as a disappointing sequel at the time, 2 Fast 2 Furious has actually aged quite well. John Singleton's transition into the action genre netted some great movies, and this one is among them. A super fun watch if you're looking to entertain friends.
