The Quick Analysis

Asteroid City is a meditative experience that states up front that “Asteroid City does not exist. It is an imaginary drama created expressly for this broadcast. The characters are fictional. The text hypothetical. The events an apocryphal fabrication. But together they present an authentic account of a modern theatrical production.” So most of what’s happening can be, maybe even should be, read through the lens of “this is representative of creating a play or film.” This is reinforced by all the cutaways to the actual creation of the diegetic staging of Asteroid City. But also in that climactic sequence at the end when the whole cast, outside of their characters, in the acting class, repeat “You can’t wake up, if you don’t fall asleep.” In this case, falling asleep is a euphemism for engaging with art.

Aside from the statements about artistic creation and performance, Asteroid City explores themes of grief, closure, parenting, celebrity, technology, government, and larger existential questions brought about by an alien encounter/artistic experience.
