The Quick Explanation
Kevin Williamson was a down-on-his-luck screenwriter who loved scary movies, felt there hadn’t been a great one in a while, so decided to conduct an autopsy on the slasher film. Wes Craven was a master of the horror genre who had become, by the mid-nineties, disillusioned with its tropes and limitations. Scream is a perfect marriage of those perspectives.
While the meta-satire is often the major talking point around Scream, it was ahead of the curve in its exploration of the media’s relationship with true crime and the way in which media can fuel the story, become the story, and affect the people who are part of the story. It’s incredibly relevant to modern times.
