Dissecting the Letterboxd Top 250

Letterboxd recently changed the algorithm for its “Official Top 250 Narrative Feature Films” list, aka the Letterboxd Top 250. In response to the newly released Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse claiming the #1 spot in a matter of days, it seems they deemed it necessary to re-calibrate how they weighted average ratings and ranked the top films (you can read more about their decision here). You can find the Letterboxd 250 written out below.

Here at Film Colossus, this rearrangement gave us an idea: to dissect all 250 of ’em. Although it’ll quite the undertaking, we’re committed to providing movie guides for every single film. For those unaware, our movie guides cover every important aspect of a film: title, themes, ending, motifs, key shots, and questions. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive guide that allows us to better understand a film’s core message, to illuminate the beauty of its art. So matter how long this takes, we will work our way through every movie on the Letterboxd Top 250.

We’ll continue to update this list as new movies are voted in and out. Even when a movie leaves the list, we’ll house its movie guide here. The goal is to provide the ultimate library of analytical material for what many consider to be the greatest films of all time.

As always, we invite you to participate in the comments section, as our movie guides are dependent upon the collective insight of movie lovers. If your theories and additions are quality, we’ll include them in the guide and include you as a source.
