The Quick Explanation
Suzume is a movie that explores the grieving process. But not just from an individual standpoint—from a national, societal, communal standpoint. Director Makoto Shinkai stated in an interview that the Great Earthquake of 2011 completely reshaped his worldview and helped him focus as an artist. The character of Suzume could be seen as an extension of Shinkai, as Suzume deals with losing her mother years after that very earthquake. Her fight to protect Japan from oncoming natural disasters is a defamiliarization of the mental processing of her own grief. As she moves between various areas that have been stricken by natural disaster, she connects with lost souls who died through the Ever-After, as well as the people who lost loved ones. By connecting more with her homeland and its people, she learns to become whole again and start her life anew.
