Digger with his shovel at parliament

Digger: the full timeline before Fossil Fools, during, and after

Digger has a lot going on. There’s the play, the real world, and then backstory that informs both the play and real world. So if you’re trying to figure out when everything in Digger actually happened, this is the full timeline. It covers the rise of the Rockwell family to the Judy disaster, through Fossil Fools, to Kenny’s revival of the play decades later.

Before the events of Fossil Fools

Digger Rockwell’s granddaddy started the family oil business in Texas in 1917, after buying a shovel and digging. Digger’s dad eventually took over the company. Then Digger. It’s now an empire.

At some point, Digger and his father become aware of methane issues when drilling into permafrost.

More than 30 years before the Judy disaster, Digger gets Maggie the cat.

At some point, Digger becomes friends with President Compson. Compson conducts backroom deals that allow Digger to drill in Greenland at the 79 North facility.

During the film, Digger mentions a fiasco at COP30. COP30 was a real event. By that, I mean a real event in our world. It was the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference and happened in November of 2025.

That means the events of Digger take place sometime after November 2025. That could be a few months to a few years.

Two weeks before the 79 North explosion, Sandy Clarkson briefs Digger about the five-foot crack.

Maggie’s waning health consumes Digger.

By the morning of the explosion, the environmental security team had sent Digger at least 42 emails about the crack, as well as images, messages, and videos.

The events depicted in Fossil Fools

Compson mentions that he might not see Thanksgiving because of his cancer, and the trees outside Digger’s home have orange leaves. So it’s probably sometime in the fall. October or early November.

So on that first day: Clarkson’s call, the explosion, Ganesh’s arrival, and the initial meeting with President Compson and his cabinet all happen on the same day. Ganesh explains Judy could hit Europe in three days.

Roughly three days later: Digger, Compson, and all the president’s men witness Judy hit Europe and the resulting devastation. Compson says his surgery is “next Tuesday”.

When Ganesh and Digger tell Compson about Kimberly, it’s the day after Compson’s surgery. So Wednesday. That means the speech at the European Parliament was sometime between when Judy hit and the “next Tuesday”.

So maybe a week or so has passed.

Curtis confirms that the strike on Kremlin Nova happened Thursday morning, so the day after Ganesh and Digger inform Compson.

The play then jumps five years into the future. Digger, his sister, little Kenny, and others are living on one of Digger’s Alaskan oil rigs. The United States government continues to support Digger by providing supplies and a military escort.

Compson has just passed away. The former vice president, Eddie, is now president. And he immediately pulls the military escort and cuts off supplies. Digger, feeling at a loss, leaps from the rig.

The end.

The events after Fossil Fools

We don’t know how much time passed between Digger’s demise and the original debut of Fossil Fools. We do know the film’s present takes place 25 years after the debut. Even if the play was written immediately after Digger’s jump, that means at least 30 years passed. The other factor is Kenny. He was a child when Judy hit. He looks to be in his early to mid-30s. Maybe early 40s.

So if Judy occurred in 2026, the movie probably takes place sometime between 2056 and 2066.

15 years before the current production, Kenny saw Fossil Fools for the first time and thought the experience it gave the audience was incredible.

Sometime in the next 15 years, Kenny buys the rights to Fossil Fools.

It’s unclear how much wealth Kenny inherited from his family.

At some point, he starts Worldwide Security, a global intelligence firm. We don’t know what kind of services he provides. Maybe he contributes to a totalitarian system. Or maybe he’s doing third-party oversight of oil drills throughout the world. The movie doesn’t give us any real information about the character, which has left people to make assumptions.

I’m guessing there are air pollution issues from the nuclear waste released when the US destroyed Kimberly. That’s why they have a system alerting people to the severity of the air quality. Though it could be from methane or another pollutant.

New York City suffers some kind of flooding. It doesn’t seem as catastrophic as what happened in Europe, but there are clear signs of damage. This may have been a single occurrence or something that happens with the ocean having a higher water level.

Kenny decides to revive Fossil Fools and spends “a gajillion” dollars to make that happen. He restores the old theater, brings in all the cast and crew, and that leads us to the day the film takes place.
