Under the Skin has been a divisive film since release. Its methodical pacing and the seemingly impenetrable aspects of its story and themes can leave a lot of viewers feeling alienated. But visually and narratively Under the Skin is a feast that mixes tragedy and beauty in a way that can actually rekindle our appreciation for humanity. It’s not an easy artistic accomplishment, yet Jonathan Glazer and Scarlett Johansson manage it all the same. Under the Skin is an ode to otherness, belonging, self-discovery, and transcendence.
